At first, horses were considered as wild animals similar to Zebras. Humans hunted them for their meat and skin. Things have changed when people started taming horses around 3000 B.C. Since then, horses became essential to numerous human societies until engines have been introduced. Yet, horses are still often associated with heroic uses in wars and symbolizes honor in different cultures. Listed below are more interesting facts about horses.

- Horses belong to family of “Equus”, an ancient Greek word which means “quickness”.
- To determine the age of the horse, its teeth should be counted.
- Did you know that the heart of horse weighs about 10 lbs?
- In order to communicate, a horse uses its facial expressions. You can determine its mood through its ears, eyes and nostrils.
- There are more than 350 recognized breeds of horses and ponies can be found.
- A horse can drink around 10 gallons of water a day.
- Any markings that appear on the horse’s forehead are called “star” despite whether they are not star-shaped.
- Horses can gallop, trot, walk and canter.
- You can measure how tall the horse is using your hand. Each hand is equivalent to 4 inches.
- As herbivore, horses feed on hay and grass. Other food sources for horses are oats, barley, bran and maize.
- Horses can come in varies colors. Black, cream, gray, brown or combination are the usually horse’s colors.
